What’s The Difference Between Freeze Dried & Dehydrated Foods?

Freeze dry fresh foods for longer storageFreeze dried foods are flash frozen and then dried.
Freeze drying removes the water, not the flavor. So freeze dried foods retain virtually all their fresh food taste, vitamins and nutritional content.  Weighs less than fresh. Freeze dried foods have 98% of their water removed. This significantly reduces the food’s weight, making it easier to handle and less costly to transport. For example, 3kg of chicken weighs only 1kg after freeze drying, and rapidly rehydrates back to its original weight. Freeze drying is generally more expensive then dehydrating. To create freeze dried food, the food item is first flash frozen and then low level heat is applied inside a vacuum chamber. Doing this dehydrates the food item and results in a dried product. After that the food item is packed for long-term storage. Freeze drying retains the color, texture, shape, flavor, and nutrition of the food item.

Dehydrated Foods are top-quality foods, that have been picked at their ripeness, cleansed and trimmed to leave only the best parts. These choice foods are then dehydrated, where 98% of their moisture is removed. This is done by a highly sophisticated drying process. They are then packed in heavy-duty enameled cans, and sealed with a special inert atmosphere to ensure the longest possible storage life.

Because their bulk and weight have been greatly reduced, dehydrated foods are more compact and convenient for storing and require very little space. They offer quick mobility in the event of an evacuation alert. For example, one case of regular canned food weighs approximately 24 pounds. The same item of dehydrated foods would weigh from 36 to 45 ounces, and would be packed in just one #10 can. Dehydrated foods have approximately double the yield of regular canned foods even though their cost is much lower.

Most of us already eat dehydrated foods daily. Foods like pasta, cereal, beans, cake and baking mixes, as well as many fast foods. In dehydrating foods, water is slowly removed by cooking it out of the food item, without cooking the food itself.

You can see how the Freeze drying process works:

Freeze drying is a process which is suitable for a wide variety of industrial products. These include agrochemicals, pharmaceutical intermediates, biological products, foods and flavorings.

The purpose of freeze drying is to remove a solvent (usually water) from dissolved or dispersed solids. It is an excellent method for preserving materials that are unstable in the presence of water. In addition, freeze drying can be used to separate and recover volatile substances and to purify materials.

The freeze drying process is particularly suitable for products which are sensitive to heat, subject to oxidation, or shear sensitive.

Once freeze dried, food products have the following benefits:
  • Appearance – Freeze dried foods maintain their original shape and texture, unlike air dried foods which shrink and shrivel due to high temperature processing. Just add water and in minutes the food rehydrates to its original form.
  • Taste – Tastes as good as fresh. Freeze drying removes the water, not the flavor. So freeze dried foods retain virtually all their fresh food taste, vitamins and nutritional content.
  • Weight – Weighs less than fresh. Freeze dried foods have 98% of their water removed. This significantly reduces the food’s weight, making it easier to handle and less costly to transport. For example, 3kg of chicken weighs only 1kg after freeze drying, and rapidly rehydrates back to its original weight.
  • longest possible storage life – Freeze dried foods can be stored for months or years at room temperature without deterioration or spoilage.
  • Low Storage Costs – Because it can be stored at room temperature, freeze dried food does not require costly cold or chilled storage facilities, making it much cheaper to store.

More long term food storage…

Paracord In One Minute

True military or civilian parachute cord is referred to as 550 paracord due to its

550 lb. minimum breaking strength.

Typical nylon military spec cord is made up of 7 strands which are composed of 3 individual twisted braded lines. Civilian cord on the other hand is generally is made of 7 strands each of which are made up of two individual lines braid twisted together.

 Military Type III - Paracord

There are technically 6 different types of Military cords and all are specked to have a minimum elongation (stretch) of 30%. Only two have breaking strengths over 550 lbs…Type III and Type IV (750 lbs). Typical 550 paracord is appx 4mm or 5/32 in diameter.

Now you know the facts. If your investing in the real thing, look for the true 550 rating. Be wary of bargain “Paracords”. You may be getting decent cordage depending on your needs but more than likely will not be getting the real “550 Paracord” you were originally looking for.

You never know…your life could depend on it!

BREAKING: European Commission to criminalize nearly all seeds and plants not registered with government

A new law proposed by the European Commission would make it illegal to “grow, reproduce or trade” any vegetable seeds that have not been “tested, approved and accepted” by a new EU bureaucracy named the “EU Plant Variety Agency.” It’s called the Plant Reproductive Material Law, and it attempts to put the government in charge of virtually all plants and seeds. Home gardeners who grow their own plants from non-regulated seeds would be considered criminals under this law.

The draft text of the law, which has already been amended several times due to a huge backlash from gardeners, is viewable here.

Ancient Grains Prepper Seeds

Stock up on heirloom seeds now

“This law will immediately stop the professional development of vegetable varieties for home gardeners, organic growers, and small-scale market farmers,” said Ben Gabel, vegetable breeder and director of The Real Seed Catalogue. “Home gardeners have really different needs – for example they grow by hand, not machine, and can’t or don’t want to use such powerful chemical sprays. There’s no way to register the varieties suitable for home use as they don’t meet the strict criteria of the Plant Variety Agency, which is only concerned about approving the sort of seed used by industrial farmers.”

save your seeds

Virtually all plants, vegetable seeds and gardeners to eventually be registered by government

All governments are, of course, infatuated with the idea of registering everybody and everything. Under Title IV of the proposed EU law:

Title IV Registration of varieties in national and Union registers
The varieties, in order to be made available on the market throughout the Union, shall be included in a national register or in the Union register via direct application procedure to the CVPO.

Gardeners must also pay fees to the EU bureaucracy for the registration of their seeds. From the proposed law text:

The competent authorities and the CPVO should charge fees for the processing of
applications, the formal and technical examinations including audits, variety denomination, and the maintenance of the varieties for each year for the duration of
the registration.

While this law may initially only be targeted at commercial gardeners, it sets a precedent to sooner or later go after home gardeners and require them to abide by the same insane regulations.

Government bureaucracy gone insane

“This is an instance of bureaucracy out of control,” says Ben Gabel. “All this new law does is create a whole new raft of EU civil servants being paid to move mountains of papers round all day, while killing off the seed supply to home gardeners and interfering with the right of farmers to grow what they want. It also very worrying that they have given themselves the power to regulate and licence any plant species of any sort at all in the future – not just agricultural plants, but grasses, mosses, flowers, anything at all – without having to bring it back to the Council for a vote.”

As a hint of the level of insane bureaucracy that gardeners and vegetable growers will be subject to under this EU law, check out this language from the proposed EU law:

Specific provisions are set out on the registration in the Union variety register and with regard to the possibility for the applicant to launch an appeal against a CPVO decision. Such provisions are not laid down for the registration in the national variety
registers, because they are subject to national administrative procedures. A new obligation for each national variety examination centre to be audited by the CPVO will be introduced with the aim to ensure the quality and harmonisation of the variety registration process in the Union. The examination centre of the professional operators will be audited and approved by the national competent authorities. In case of direct application to the CPVO it will audit and approve the examination centres it uses for variety examination.

Such language is, of course, Orwellian bureaucratic speak that means only one thing: All gardeners should prepare to be subjected to total government insanity over seeds, vegetables and home gardens.

RealSeeds.co.uk warns about any attempt to actually try to understand the law by reading it:

You cannot just read the first 5 pages or so that are an ‘executive summary’, and think you know what this law is about. The executive summary is NOT what will become the law. It is the actual Articles themselves that become law, the Summary has no legal standing and is just tacked on as an aid to the public and legislators, it is supposed to give background information and set the proposed legislation in context so people know what is going on and why.

The problem with this law has always been that the Summary says lots of nice fluffy things about preserving biodiversity, simplifying legislation, making things easier etc – things we all would love – but the Articles of the law actually do completely the opposite. And the Summary is not what becomes the law.

For example, the Summary of drafts 1, 2 & 3 talked about making things easier for ‘Amateur’ varieties. But the entire class of Amateur vegetables – which we have spent 5 years working with DEFRA to register – was actually abolished entirely in the Articles right from the start. Yet the Summary , and press releases based on it, still talked about how it will help preserve Amateur varieties! The Summary is completely bogus. Do not base your views of the law on it!

So, be warned. By all means, read it yourself. But you have the ignore the Summary as that is not the Law, and does not reflect what is in the Law.

As you might suspect, this move is the “final solution” of Monsanto, DuPont and other seed-domination corporations who have long admitted their goal is the complete domination of all seeds and crops grown on the planet. By criminalizing the private growing of vegetables — thereby turning gardeners into criminals — EU bureaucrats can finally hand over full control of the food supply to powerful corporations like Monsanto.

Most heirloom seeds to be criminalized

Nearly all varieties of heirloom vegetable seeds will be criminalized under this proposed EU law. This means the act of saving seeds from one generation to the next — a cornerstone of sustainable living — will become a criminal act.

In addition, as Gabel explains, this law “…effectively kills off development of home-garden seeds in the EU.”

This is the ultimate wish of all governments, of course: To criminalize any act of self-reliance and make the population completely dependent on monopolistic corporations for their very survival. This is true both in the USA and the EU. This is what governments do: They seize control, one sector at a time, year after year, until you are living as nothing more than a total slave under a globalist dictatorial regime.

An online petition has already been started on this issue and has garnered nearly 25,000 signatures so far.

NOAH’S ARK and 240 other organizations from 40 European countries have also initiated an “open letter” appealing to Brussels bureaucrats to stop the insanity. Click here for a translated version of their petition.

I saw this coming

By the way, I am on the record predicting this exact scenario. Read Chapter Three of my fiction book, “Freedom Chronicles 2026.” (Read it FREE, online.) It depicts a seed smuggler living in a time when seeds are criminalized and people earn a living as professional seed smugglers.

In my book, a woman uses a specially-crafted breast prosthesis to smuggle seeds to “underground gardeners” in full defiance of laws crafted by Monsanto. A vast underground network of grassroots gardeners and scientists manage to put together a “seed weapon” to destroy GMOs and take back the food supply from evil corporations.

Mark my words: Seeds are about to become contraband. Anyone who grows their own food is about to be targeted as a criminal. The governments of the world, conspiring with corporations like Monsanto, do not want any individual to be able to grow their own food.

This is about total domination of the food supply and the criminalizing of gardeners. And this is what big government always does after centralizing sufficient power. All governments inherently seek total control over the lives of everyone, and if you don’t set boundaries and limits for government (i.e. the Bill of Rights), it eventually runs roughshod over all freedoms and liberties, including the freedom to grow your own food.

10 Survivalist Essentials for Your Bug-Out-Bag

A bug-out-bag is a must-have for any savvy survivalist. When an emergency occurs that requires evacuating, it keeps you prepared while you’re on-the-go. This portable kit is designed to help you survive an evacuation for three days. Some people refer to it as a 72-hour kit. The three main characteristics of a good bug-out-bag are:

  • Portable, making it easy to carry around.
  • Lightweight, which is why only essentials for three days should be packed.
  • Durable, meaning high quality material, zippers, straps, etc… to last throughout your evacuation.

10 Items Every Survivalist’s Bug-Out-Bag Should Contain

Depending on the type of survivalist you are, you may choose to alter this list a bit. These are just my suggestions, as one survivalist to another:

1. Water – Experts recommend packing at least one gallon of water, per person, per day. However, that’s a lot of weight to tote around. Most savvy survivalists prefer other options for clean water, such as:

  • Water bottle and filter
  • Water filter straw
  • Water pump with filter
  • Water purifier

2. Non-Perishable Foods – If you’re a fan of dehydrated foods, you’ll also need to pack a portable stove to prepare your meals. Canned foods require no cooking for healthy consumption. However, these food item are extremely heavy to carry. On the other hand, freeze dried foods are prepared in minutes by simply adding hot water. They’re also very lightweight to tote around.
3. First Aid Kit – Remember that you want to keep your bug-out-bag as lightweight as possible. So, only pack the basic essentials:

  • Adhesive bandages
  • Suture kit
  • OTC anti-inflammatory meds
  • OTC pain-killers
  • Triple-antibiotic ointment
  • Burn ointment
  • Wound-closure strips
  • Sam Splint
  • Antibiotics (just in case)

4. Clothing – Pack enough to hold you over for three days. Be sure to include a thick coat and strong shoes/boots, as well extra pairs of thick socks.
5. Shelter – This can be a tent, tarp, fly, large poncho, hammock with rain fly, or anything a savvy survivalist can use to create an emergency shelter.
6. Important Documents – Keep a file folder containing documents such as passports, birth certificates, copies of IDs, list of important phone numbers, maps, evacuation routes and stations, etc…
7. Hard Cash – Will need it for survival, as electrical, banking, credit card processing and ATM machines services may be done indefinitely.
8. Gun & Ammunition – Depending on where you choose to evacuate to, you may need to hunt for food. Will also come in handy for protection, especially if you end up sleeping outside.
9. Battery Operated Radio – Who knows where you’ll end up after being evacuated. Your radio will keep you informed on updated evacuation news. It may also be your only source of entertainment with no television access.
10. Survival Kit – Should include essentials such as:

  • Refillable butane lighter or waterproof matches
  • Compass
  • Small folding knife
  • Whistle
  • Battery operated flashlight
  • Extra batteries

Top 5 Reasons to be a Prepper in America

Believe it or not we use to have a common thread between us that understood disasters are inevitable.

should you start prepping?

Should you be a prepper?

Across the U.S. Americans have let their guards down, committing their absolute faith and confidence in the federal government’s bureaucracies that continue to drop the ball. When time and history continue to prove deniers wrong the question has to be asked, why are you not preparing for at least one of these Top 5 Reasons to be a Prepper? Think it out and understand it doesn’t take anything more than responsibility and education to prepare for SHTF (Shit to Hit The Fan).

5. Viral Pandemic

We have a reasonable amount of faith in our medical professionals and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control), but we’re still forced to accept that a mutated strain of Ebola can spread across our globe in as little as a few weeks. From 1976 to 2011 there have been 28 known cases of Ebola (Hemorrhagic Fever) outbreaks, and three of those outbreaks were in the United States of America. There is no known cure for Ebola, and when an artificial or natural mutation occurs in its strain our country will be absolutely defenseless. Pandemics like Ebola are devastating to any population regardless of their scientific advancements. For instance, the most devastating pandemic known as ‘The Black Death’ occurred in the fourteenth century. In as little as two years The Black Death mortality rate quickly rose to approximately two hundred million fatalities. However, these cases lacked modern medicine and ‘over-night’ international travel.

Worried yet? Well, there’s a reason Viral Pandemic is only listed as Number 5 on our Reasons to be a Prepper. America leads the way in microbiology and medical advancements, including several other countries throughout the globe who don’t want the entire species to go extinct. In addition to the natural outbreak of a population leveling virus, you also have to prepare for an intentional release by man. Humans have a history of being self-destructive and unbalanced when fueled by some insane ideology, being a prepper could save your and your family’s life.

4. Cyber Attack

The digital infrastructure of The United States is the internet, and its not adequately protected as seen in the latest rise of publicized cyber-attacks on American interests. If our digital infrastructure does not undergo immediate advancements in defense technology the attacks will only become more frequent and more damaging. Think about it, no more money from the ATM because the world’s banking systems have been successfully hacked. Without money to exchange hands our economy would collapse, causing the remaining countries’ economies follow in America’s steps due to international banking and trading reliance, and vice versa.

The most prominent case of cyber-attacks against American Institutions occurred between October 2011 and February 2012, with 50,000 successful attacks reported to the Department of Homeland Security and 86 of attacks on critical infrastructure networks. Critical infrastructure networks such as; power grid, basic communication (cell phones, broadcasts, and internet access), water supplies, oil production and delivery, agriculture (no more food from the store). When you think about it, we continue to produce synthetic processing power advancements, making processors faster and smarter, which follow a trending escalation in the severe complexity of cyber-attacks. Common sense should tell you cyber-attack is a potential threat to you, your family and friends.

3. Economic Collapse

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the U.S. Labor Force percentage of employed Americans has continued to decline since 2006. You will hear magical platitudes about these numbers, but the realities are plain as beans at times. The increase of Americans that are no longer in the labor force since Obama was elected in 2008 is no more than three times greater than the increase in the rates of the 1980’s. With governments across the globe invading the private sector it’s no surprise liquid and independent capitalism is crippled.

A devastating -.01 GDP (Gross Domestic Product) announced in January 2013 followed a continuous pattern of economic recession since 2008. According to the USDA the number of Americans who rely upon the government for basic needs has reached a record high of 47,710,324+/- or 15%. All the numbers are pointing towards economic collapse, the middle class will inevitably be taxed at a pervasive level and our Country’s economy will be finished. What’s Obama’s answer after spending six trillion dollars in four years with only negative and downward sloping results? Tax more Americans and spend more, that’s called the brass tacks. This makes economic collapse a valid reason to be a prepper.

2. Natural Disaster

Natural disasters are common in America, tornadoes occur at least a thousand times every year, 12% of the population was threatened by a hurricane in 2011, mega floods occur every 100-200 years and since 1980 there has been over 410 recorded droughts. With high probability stats like these natural disasters takes a well-deserved 2nd place reason to be a prepper. Natural disasters are common enough and relatively simple enough to prepare for. A lack of preparedness contributed to the death rates of Katrina, where approximately 971 deaths were due to drowning, murder, and etc…

A basic approach to prepping would have saved countless lives in Katrina and other natural disasters with a minimal amount of preparedness required. Natural disasters are not a threat to continental and global populations but they can still do a lot of damage based on their severity. Basic preparedness and basic knowledge saves lives. Always have a means of defense and survival for you and your family.

1. WAR

In 238 Years America has been in 17 major wars, and over 47 Attacks were on American Soil and Embassies since 1920… that we know about. Pax Romana was stable and prosperous for two hundred years before its first major crisis that was well survived. Now we have countries like North Korea quickly becoming a threat to the United States and our allies, they are firmly tied to China and their government is actively trying to invade Japanese lands to pillage their natural resources through slow, but continuous strikes.

We have stood with Israel since 1948 and they are at the brink of war with Egypt (The Muslim Brotherhood whose first bylaw is Jihad) and Iran (Ran by Muslim Extremists whose first bylaw is Jihad, and we’re letting them build Nukes.), and now Barack Obama has approved sending several M1A1 Abrams Tanks and F16’s to Egypt. Now factor in Russia, who will defend Bashir Assad’s Syrian Regime and Iran if America takes action. Now you have a perfect set of circumstances for global war. This information is not being broadcasted in the main stream media and you will have to learn for yourself without being spoon fed what to believe.

So the Top Reason for you to be a Prepper or Survivalist is War, the most common disaster Americans face. Maybe having some supplies stored and firearms at the ready wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Never forget, America has a wealth of resources and the rest of the world is quickly depleting their own, by then the laws of human nature are inescapable.

HOW TO MAKE: PINE CONE FIRE STARTERS

“You can totally make these”.

Let’s get started, You’ll need:
  • 24 or so Pine Cones
  • 2 lbs Wax (I used soy)
  • Candle twine
  • A Scent (Optional)
  • A cupcake pan
  • Baking cup liners – A MUST

(Ignore the Crisco in the photo, tried greasing instead of the liners the first it was a FAIL)

First, I cut 24 – 8 inch strips of my candle twine. Then I wrapped it around the bottom of each pinecone, like so (see image below). Leaving about 2 inches pulled towards the top for “lighting purposes”.
Then in a mason jar (or really any vessel you don’t mind being covered in wax) heat up your wax.  It took me a 3 ‘jar and wax’ melts to have enough wax for all of my pinecones. I’m sure I could have used a larger container but my wine kept me occupied. Ahem.
Once the wax is melted, pour yourself another glass of wine and add a scent if you’d like smelly pinecones (I used the recomended dose on the bottle). I made sure it was mixed then I poured the wax into the cupcake liners about half way full placing one pine cone in each slot immediately after.
Now here’s the hard part, you have to walk way.
I know it’s hard but trust me, it’s better for everyone. Leave them alone for about two hours before poking to prevent the wax from getting all jacked up. After they are completely cooled you can peel them out of their liners, or just bag them up as is.
With the batch of 24 I had enough to wrap up 5 bags full for gifts and have a dozen or so for Mr. A and I to use here at home.
And here’s Mr. A’s proof that they work (ie: light).
Will you try them?
